Spotlight on 105NE
District Governor 105NE
newsletter September 2012 Issue 3
I have started up and down the long road of visits across our district with four now completed. Not withstanding the distances it has been both a pleasure and education for me and I am looking forward to getting to see many more of our Lions friends in the coming months.
It has been my sad duty to attend the funeral PDG Jim Carson who died suddenly in August. As many of you already know Lion Jim has served the district and in particular the interests of his native Scotland for many years. Jim will be sadly missed by us all and I know that I can speak on behalf of the whole family of Lions in passing on our condolences to Elizabeth and family for their untimely loss.
On a much happier note the convention in Aberdeen this November is coming together very well with the speakers for the afternoon session all now in place. Following the business meeting on the Saturday the theme will be homelessness, drug and alcohol issues and what are we doing about it? The hotel is well placed in the city centre with access to shops and other tourist facilities. I am looking forward to meeting many of you there so if you haven’t done so get your booking form off to Lion Carole Bilsdon early to avoid disappointment. Check out the website at www.lions105ne.org and click on conventions.
Membership continues to be a major target for the district, however we are making some progress so far this year and if this trend is maintained we are on target to end the year with a net gain, however lets not get complaisant. I intend to run another Signature projects and membership growth retention workshop in Scotland on the 21
st October this year. If you wish to attend please contact PDG Tony Campbell who is arranging the workshop. We would like to see as many Presidents and Zone chairs there as possible but it is not restricted to club officers - all Lions are welcome subject to space. Details and venue have been sent out.

Flying high – another success for inter club co-operation
Sunderland International Air Show is now recognised as the largest free air show in Europe and with park and ride at only £5 per car it is a great day out for all the family.
The attendance over the two days is estimated by Sunderland City Council to be just short of 1,000,000 people
This year was the 24
th Sunderland Air Show and the second year of attendance by Lions Clubs International.
Once again10 clubs from District 105NE joined together to make the event happen and where possible assisted in providing the necessary manpower. The clubs involved were Consett, Darlington, Durham, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Peterlee, Scarborough, Sunderland, Teesdale, and Yarm. It also must be stressed that attendance at the event could only happen with additional support from the Multiple District and the Cabinet of District NE.
The weather was especially kind for just the three days, allowing us to erect the marquee and set our stall out on the Friday in order to be fully ready for the Saturday morning when the event took off, literally!
The event was superb and the crowd in great form, over the two days we distributed 3,000 leaflets, 2,000 Lions generic carrier bags, several boxes of Message in a Bottle bottles and over 100 teddies via the Lions tombola.
Thanks must go to all the clubs involved as it is a great example of inter club co-operation and special thanks to Lion Fiona for enduring the heat of the Lion costume for most of Sunday!
The "Lion" proved a huge hit with children attending!
Was it worth it? Did we attract any potential new Lions? Who knows, but what is certain is that without such PR exercises such as this we will cease to exist in the mind of the public, and that can only be to our detriment.
Hopefully we will all be back in Sunderland for the 2013 International Air Show to enjoy another great weekend of Lionism.
Nick Barron PDG, Lions Coordinator

Meet Leon the Lion
Malton, Norton and District Lions Club’s new member and mascot.
At this year’s Malton Show 96 children entered a competition to give Malton, Norton and District’s latest Lion a name. In exchange for their contribution each then had their face painted as a Lion – some of them looking particularly scary!!
But it was the entry of six year old Henry Wilson of Norton that was the first to be drawn out of the hat by club members and the club’s newest Lion – Deborah Burton – took Leon along to meet Henry and thank him personally and to present him with a "lion cub" to keep.
Deborah said that Leon hopes to attend all the Lions’ charity functions in future and will also visit a number of the local villages over the coming months.
45 year’s service with Lions
At its August meeting the City of Edinburgh Lions Club members joined Immediate Past International President Dr Tam in thanking Lion Jim Forrest for 45 years service as a Lion, being a Charter member of City of Edinburgh. Lion President Andrew Kerr Sutherland presented Jim with an International chevron along with an LCIF gold pin for 2011/12 bought by his fellow members to recognise the occasion.
On receiving the pins Lion Jim reminded the members that it was actually 46 years - as it took a year to get the Club chartered! Here’s to many more active years from Jim.
Long service at Teesdale
At their recent Charter dinner Teesdale Lions Club took the opportunity to recognise long service within club membership The six Lions attending. (plus PDG Jack Seear who was unable to attend) clocked a magnificent 115 years between them.
Photo shows Lions Jackie Beere, David Atkinson, Bob Garton, John Mutum, Sue Barron and Fiona Doyle.
Youth Exchange 2012
This year NE hosted nine girls from eight different countries.
First timer Lion Mary Pearce, Durham hosted Salla, a Finn and a Japanese, Saaya, and Lions Tom and Beth Jamieson, Edinburgh, also first timers, hosted another Finn, Eveliina. In Dumfries Lions Bill and Sheila Farries had a visitor, Olga from Belarus and Lion Jim and Linda Nelson played host to a Spaniard, Ana, and a Swede, Annette while Lion Jim and Ann McCormack hosted a Georgian, Lizi, a Czech, Tereza and an Italian, Lucia.
In Dumfries
105NE Spotlight September 2012 Page 4 of 8
Dumfries hosts welcome their youth guests
In Dumfries we do not stick to a tight schedule and the students are encouraged to set their own programme with guidance from their hosts. The first day was spent exploring Dumfries and this was followed by visits to Hadrian’s Wall, by car, Glasgow, by bus, Edinburgh, by train, and local places of interest.
Alasdair Cook, Dumfries Lion, organised a sailing night at his yachting club and this went down very
well with the girls.
The highlight of the stay was a ceilidh at a local bowling club. This was arranged to coincide with the club’s handover evening and was a huge success with all the girls dancing the night away.
The ten days passed too quickly and it was time for our new family members to move on to the Youth Centre in Liverpool or, in Lizi’s case, to another host family.
The three Dumfries host families attended the Gala Dinner in Liverpool much to the surprise of the girls who did not know we were coming. We had not realised what a success the ceilidh had been until we found that the "Scottish Team" had taught some of the dances to fellow members as part of the Gala Dinner entertainment.
In Durham
Despite mediocre weather, we managed to enjoy several days out in Northumberland and Yorkshire, as well as the Durham Lions Summer Fun Day, where they helped Leo Christoph and other Lions with activities throughout the day.

In Edinburgh
Eveliina enjoyed her stay with Lions Tom, Beth and family and enjoyed a visit to Hopetoun House where she helped at the Lions stall for the 2012 Hopetoun Horse Trials, earning a tour of the House, courtesy of Lord Hopetoun. On visiting a Club meeting she presented a bannerette from her home Lions.
All the host families have had e-mails from their visitors thanking them for their hospitality and kindness to their "host" daughters.
This is what Eveliina had to say:
I've been at home for a week and started my last year in upper secondary school. It's nice to be here again but I wouldn't have minded staying in England either!
Thank you for your hospitality and the good time I had in Scotland. I enjoyed seeing different places and all the people I met were very kind. I'm really glad that I participated Youth Exchange program because it was definitely one of the best experiences I've had. I'll visit your country again in the future, hopefully we will meet that time.
My host family in England was very nice too, they had had a few exchange students before. I stayed there with a Japanese girl. All too soon those ten days were over as well. I already miss UK but I hope it won't take long until I come there again.
Hopefully you enjoyed your experience too, and think it was worth trying!
Tom and Beth certainly enjoyed the experience as did those who met her during her stay.
This year proved again that youth hosting can be fun and very worthwhile for both sides.
Why don’t YOU try it.
Lion Jim McCormack, Youth Exchange Officer
Branching out
The Eco-club of Crombie School, Westhill, planted a tree in honour of the Queen's Jubilee.
The tree, a red maple, was chosen by the members of Westhill and Skene Lions Club and presented to the pupils of Crombie School. Leo, the Lion’s mascot, was present to help the pupils plant the tree.
One pupil said that she hoped to be able to bring her children back to Crombie in thirty years and show them the tree.
Patience pays
When it comes to patience and tenacity, Morpeth Lion Harry Cone can teach us all a thing or two.
Over four years ago he agreed to spearhead the installation of a public bench commemorating those Lions who are sadly no longer with us.
In the intervening period Morpeth has experienced floods, changes in the Town Centre’s street configuration and a change in the local authority set-up. Nevertheless, the project was always uppermost in Harry’s mind.
105NE Spotlight September 2012 Page 6 of 8
2012 suddenly saw doors opening and last month the bench was installed on Morpeth’s main street with a commemorative plaque positioned. Harry said ‘I suppose I had better start looking for a long term project now!!'
The photograph shows Back row, left to right – 2 seat installers with Lions Les Brindley, Les Sage, Dave Wheeler and Alan Taylor.

Special Olympics
There is a letter asking clubs to donate to Special Olympics. The tone of the letter is regarding to athletes costs.
Regardless of our sympathies with the athletes please be aware that the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Multiple District and Special Olympics Great Britain (SOGB) states quite clearly that monies given by Lions will be used to purchase uniforms for volunteers.
Over the last two games in Britain the number of volunteers has been about 1,500 of which 19 have been Lions.
If clubs wish to donate to SOGB they should do so in the knowledge that the monies will not be used to defray athletes expenses but will be used to purchase uniforms for volunteers.
Some clubs may decide that a better way is to go onto the Specialolympicsgb website and pick the area club and donate directly to them.
Whilst this does not guarantee use for the athletes costs it stands a better chance rather than donating to SOGB where the money must be used in accordance with the MOU.
Special Olympics Great Britain is proud to be the country’s largest provider of year-round sports training and competition programmes for children and adults with intellectual (learning) disabilities.
It is a recognised member of the Olympic family with a unique role to play. The Paralympics provides sports competitions for elite level disabled athletes with physical and sensory disabilities, including intellectual (learning) disabilities, while Special Olympics fosters community sport year-round at all levels for those with intellectual (learning) disabilities.
Hugh Kershaw, District PLD Officer
Almoner’s request
A recent request has been sent to clubs to remind everyone of the importance of keeping the District Almoner up to speed on things happening to members. A new form has been developed and if anyone needs a copy for reference please contact Lion Dave Wells at dave1wells@aol.com
Lions Clubs International is a family and it is important for the Almoner to know how the family’s doing.
Dundee on the ball at Christmas ???
Every year Dundee Lions hold a Christmas raffle at Tesco in Blairgowrie.
All Lions donate a sum of money which is used, with some help from Tesco, to fill a trolley with goods. All tickets are sold to Tesco customers so it is a local community event for Blairgowrie.
So when the Club held it this year, from 3 to 5 May - moved from Xmas for health and safety reasons: being too b****y cold for tickets sellers, some of the money was donated to Blairgowrie Under Nine Football team. This went towards a new strip which promotes Lions every time they play.

Thank you ‘mine host’
The Middlesbrough Teesside Lions Club made a presentation to "mine host" Johann [a Lion member in South Africa] at The Jet Miners, Great Broughton, of a Certificate of Appreciation and a pennant for providing the club with a temporary meeting room following the club’s departure from its previous home in Middlesbrough. The picture shows the club’s President, Giles Bolitho, making the presentation with some members of Middlesbrough Lions.

Young Ambassador 2013
In line with our Signature on youth can we please remind all Lions that we are looking for candidates for a new Young Ambassador.
Our current Young Ambassador, Conor, will once again delight those attending the Granite City Convention in Aberdeen. Supported by Dumfries Lions he has had a busy year, including an address at Holyrood as part of the Lions UN Day celebration.
However, a year passes quickly and we are on the look out for a new candidate as 105NE’s Young Ambassador. Please let me know if you are putting forward a candidate by the end of September. Full application forms do not need to be returned until Convention. The District Finals are scheduled for Sunday 2 December.

A Scottish Lion in the making ? … with a view on Sight
Commenting on figures released recently, Public Health Minister Michael Matheson said:
"It is encouraging to see that the number of people accessing free NHS eye examinations continues to increase.
"NHS eye examinations allow patients to receive, free of charge, a comprehensive assessment of their whole visual system, which is tailored to their specific needs and symptoms.
"It is vitally important that people have their eyes examined regularly. NHS eye examinations go beyond sight testing for glasses, and provide a general health check which can detect sight-threatening and treatable conditions which may previously have gone undetected."

Providing a good service
A letter from the organisers of the Gillespie MacAndrew Hopetoun House Horse Trials, a two day event at the end of July, has recognised the commitment and service of City of Edinburgh and Mid Tyne Lions, along with Lions friends and one of our Youth Exchange students from Finland.
During the event the Lions provided essential crossing point marshals as well as manning a fund raising and awareness stand. Despite bad weather the event was a tremendous success and the involvement of the Lions has been acknowledged widely – even in the September/October issue of Edinburgh Life. This is the second year that Lions have supported the event, following an approach through the 2011 Royal Highland Show stand. This highlights the importance of raising awareness and partnership working.
Malawi books
Thank you from Zone Chairman Andrew Kerr Sutherland to the Lions and clubs who have contacted him after last month’s Spotlight article about the Edinburgh Girl’s High School Library in north Malawi.
All donations of books are greatly received and we have just had confirmation from Lion Janet Chesney in Mzuzu that the school will open its doors to its first pupils on 1 October 2012.
Further development will take place over the next few months and all offers of books should be directed to Lion Andrew. As our new International President Wayne Madden has highlighted, reading and books are essential in all communities and our help in Malawi will be much appreciated.
Medic Alert has a new look
Medic Alert has launched a new website on 7 September showcasing its re-brand!
Lions are very excited about the new website as it presents the full jewellery range. It also has more information pages for members including an A-Z of conditions and links to helpful organisations.
