Happy Birthday Melvin Jones
Today we celebrate the birth of our founder, Melvin Jones, who was born on January 13, 1879 in Fort Thomas, Arizona. As a young man, Melvin moved to Chicago where he formed his own insurance agency in 1913. Soon after, he joined the Business Circle and was elected secretary. It was during his time with the Business Circle that he thought about using their talents to improve the community.
On June 7, 1917, Melvin invited similar luncheon clubs to join him in Chicago. It was there that he proposed the idea of a service oriented organization and Lions Clubs International was born.
In honor of Melvin Jones, we have encouraged Lions to participate in the Worldwide Week of Service extending from January 10th– 16th. Be sure to use the hashtag #LIONS100 when posting pictures or videos on social media sites so that other clubs can see the impact you are making in your community.
